Comments from CARF Survey - December '07

In the following areas Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program demonstrates exemplary conformance to the standards:

  • The organization is recognized for its commitment to employee retention through its innovative program of skills advancement and its annual off-site retreat.
  • The co-directors of the program display a high level of commitment to the organization.  They are complimented for their accessability to staff and the persons served.  They seek out and respond to input from all stakeholders and are visionary in their ideas for future expansion of the program while continuing to follow the master plan.  Both directors are actively involved in the Brain Injury Association of Michigan and sponsor other community events.  They have developed a strong marketing plan and contribute to community publications.
  • The extensive services provided by the medical director are excellent.  She is actively involved in all clinical team conferences, meets with the team weekly, and writes the plans of care for the persons served.   

Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program has strengths in many areas, including:

  • The organization's unique alliance with Michigan State University and Peckham, Inc., affords many opportunities for growth and development.
  • The organization obtains and utilizes stakeholder input from a variety of sources, including the town hall meetings, the advisory board, and the Living Skills Staff focus group.
  • The organization provides many resources to personnel for learning and growth, including the Learn Ove Lunch series, support to obtain brain injury specialist certification, and the tuition reimbursement program.
  • The manual for volunteer / student orientation is comprehensive and well organized.
  • All staff members are encouraged to participate in community activities, be members of clubs and organizations, and participate in assocations related to the populations served.
  • Self-inspections occur frequently and demonstrate a commitment to the provision of a safe environment for the persons served and staff. 
  • The woodshop provides opportunities for the persons served to develop productive activity skills that create value and a sense of contribution and worth.
  • Families are encouraged to be involved in the rehabilitation process and are complimentary of the staff.
  • Origami has implemented an electronic record / documentation system across the organization that creates multiple efficiencies.
  • The addition of the well-designed Semi Independent Living Program apartments demonstrates the organization's commitment to expanding the continuum of care and creating opportunities for the persons served.
  • The Animal Assisted Therapy Program is a delightful strength of the organization and provides pleasure to both the persons served and the staff.  The program provides gentle, unconditional contacts for the persons served and gives them opportunities for growth in responsibility and social interactions.

In the following areas Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program demonstrates exemplary conformance to the standards:

  • The physical plant at Peckham provides an exemplary work setting with extensive opportunities for vocational training and work experience.  Positive methods for training and increasing productivity are utilized.
  • The medical director provides a presence in the community in her role with the Capital Area Center for Independent Living.  This organization includes representatives from a tri-county area and serves as a social network and resource for activities and transportation for persons with disabilities.
  • The application of an effective systematic approach to cognitive rehabilitation using a cognitive, perceptual motor model is commended.

 

Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program has strengths in many areas, including:

  • The healthcare professional who work for Origami are committed to providing quality rehabilitation services to the numerous communities they serve.  They demonstrate knowledge of and dedication to the rehabilitation process and a concern for the outcomes achieved by those served by the brain injury program.
  • The dedication, motivation, and energy of the operational leadership that works together as a team are evident.
  • Excellent communication between the operational leadership facilitates a well-informed and motivated staff.  Evidence of formal communication is documented in staff and committee meeting minutes.  Informal communication also flows among all parties on a daily basis to resolve existing or potential issues.
  • Dignity and respect are accorded to all trainees and staff members.  This is consistently demonstrated in the interactions between staff members and the persons served.
  • Origami’s reputation for the provision of quality rehabilitation services is reflected in the tributes paid to the organization by referral sources and persons served.
  • The management team has fostered a transparent management style that facilitates seamless care delivery, team cohesiveness, and a vibrant, welcoming workplace for employees and trainees.
  • The recent purchase of a van provides the organization with three vans with which to meet the transportation needs of the persons served.  This is augmented with van service from the community.
  • Origami hosted its second annual 5k Run/Walk/Wheel event.  The proceeds are used to purchase equipment for its various programs.  The organization, in partnership with other community organizations, also sponsors a helmet give-away program for children in the community.  To date, 500 helmets have been distributed.
  • Staff members respect the input of the person served and include their input throughout the rehabilitation process.
  • The organization meets the needs of the person served throughout the continuum of care, with a treatment team that works together in a coordinated way to facilitate outcomes.
  • The program provides treatment based on sound scientific/philosophical principles and an awareness of the literature, research, and professional consensus.
  • Documentation has improved since the last survey to communicate information more clearly about the status and progress of the persons served.
  • The administrative staff members are actively involved in clinical care, administrative decision making, and clinical direction and effectively oversee the rehabilitation program.
  • The staff members of Origami are strong advocates for quality, successful treatment.
  • The organization provides well-designed, person-focused, culturally sensitive, and outcomes-focused therapeutic interventions.
  • Origami staff members are involved in ongoing research with Michigan State University on outcomes measurement using the functional outcomes focus areas (FOFA) instrument.
  • A well-designed residential facility facilitates a feeling of community.  This is complemented with a building for the provision of treatment and a wood-making shop.
