Origami has
designed a unique system in which every group activity has proven
therapeutic value. Each activity group has written goals and objectives
developed by our treatment team. Groups may be lead by Origami Living Skills Staff, therapists,
community members and/or Origami employees who are trained in specific
trades, for example carpentry.
ADJUSTMENT GROUP
Group Leader: Psychology, Social Work, Living Skills Staff
Description/Therapeutic Value: A group that provides education about brain injury and the process of adjustment following a brain injury for both the patient and the family. This group uses both an informal teaching/lecture approach, as well as a group therapy approach. Much of the focus is on self-awareness, self-concept formulation, self-esteem, self-worth, and acceptance; therefore, group therapy techniques are also used with the group to create a supportive environment in which current experiences can be addressed. The Adjustment Group also addresses the concurrent psychological difficulties that commonly arise following a brain injury and impact healing and rehabilitation process.
Frequency: 2 hours/week, as recommended by Psychology
AQUATIC THERAPY
Group Leader: Physical Therapist, Recreational Therapist, Rehab Aide, Living Skills Staff
Description/Therapeutic Value: Exercise in a pool setting helps wheelchair dependent and non-dependent individuals practice gait and muscle mobility in a safe, balance-supported environment. All clients work on flexibility, strengthening, and cardiovascular endurance while in the water. The hot tub helps to reduce muscular spasticity and increase flexibility as well as being a relaxing recreational activity. Accommodations of all types may be made for an individual to participate.
Frequency: up to 4 hours/week
ARTS AND CRAFTS GROUP
Group Leader: Art Therapist, Recreational Therapist, and Living Skills Staff
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Clients engage in art projects of their choice,
often theme or season related. Clients are responsible for research,
requesting needed materials, completion of the project, sometimes
taking a few weeks, and display of the project when completed. This
group addresses individual goals related to initiation and termination
of activity, self-expression, fine motor skills, sequencing, verbal
and written expression, following directions, and using creativity.

Group Leader: Art Therapist, Recreational Therapist, and Living Skills Staff
Description/
Therapeutic Value: An art therapist directed group in which visual thinking processes are applied. Feelings, thoughts, and perceptions, which may be difficult to verbalize, can be expressed and organized through the use of various art mediums. The creative process is conducive to individuation, the process of reaching one's full potential, and offers the opportunity for growth and change.

Therapeutic Value: This community-based group addresses such areas as cognitive skills, social interactions, physical abilities, and psychological issues.

MEMORIES
Group Leader: Community Volunteer, Recreational Therapist, and Living Skills Staff
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Utilizing personal photographs of family, friends, and special activities, group members create a personal memory scrapbook. Clients are able to choose from a wide array of backgrounds, borders, and decorations to create their album pages for the scrapbook. Creatively in expression as well as specific goal areas addressed within individualized treatment sessions are incorporated.

Therapeutic Value: Clients learn cooking skills and proper nutrition;

Description/
Therapeutic Value: A variety of therapeutic activities that are identified based on the individualized goals of group members within a social setting. Example
“Speed” card game addresses visual and motor speed,
sequencing, fine motor coordination, and memory along with social
skills. The game "Yahtzee" may address number sequencing, social skills, processing speed, and memory.

GARDENING
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist, Living Skills Staff, Various Therapists
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Garden group may include landscaping, planting seeds, preplanning a garden, maintaining plants (ie. creating and following watering schedules), harvesting fruit from orchards and vegetables from the garden, and general beautification of the property. Goals from all therapy disciplines are addressed, including: balance, coordination, visual-spatial perception, motor planning, range of motion, strengthening, cause and effect, and social interactions.
Frequency: 1-3 -hours/week (seasonal)
GYM
Group Leader: Physical Therapy, Rehab Aide, Recreational Therapist, Living Skills Staff
Description/Therapeutic Value: An exercise group which takes place within a community setting. Goals to be addressed may include improved kinesthesia (body awareness), increased muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility, improved self image, socialization, time management (scheduling, completing all exercises), leisure exploration, and problem solving skills (following a specific workout routine).
Frequency: 2-4 hours/week
HEALTHY LIFESTYLES
Group Leader: Substance Abuse Counseling, Social Work, Various Therapists as appropriate
Description/Therapeutic Value: Within this group, such fundamental principles related to wellness and lifetime fitness are addressed. Topics may include, but are not limited to, nutrition, remaining substance free, cardiovascular fitness, weight training, body composition, smoking cessation, stress management, and lifestyle related illness.
Frequency: 1 hour/week, as recommended by Social Work and/or Psychology
HOLISTIC WELLNESS
Group Leader: Registered Nurse
Description/Therapeutic Value: Within this group fundamental principles related to the medical aspect of care will be addressed. Topics may include, but are not limited to: medications, sleep, hygiene, common lab tests, nutrition, common disease processes, and mental health.
Frequency: 1 hour/week
MEN'S GROUP
Group Leader: Psychology
Description/Therapeutic Value: This group provides structured support to address the unique experience for men who have survived a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, and support are applied for individuals who are willing to receive help in several areas. In addition to providing general support for adjustment post TBI, specific topics such as relationships, thought processes, anger, stress, and the internal critic are explored.

NEWSLETTER
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist, Living Skills Staff
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Includes formulation of an Origami client created
newsletter, known as Cli-n-Tell, that contains items determined by others. Several skill areas are addressed to complete such newsletter material as special recipes, short stories, interviewing others, poetry, drawings, finding interesting tidbits to share, and reporting on rehab progress. Addresses goals related to creativity,
thought formulation, fine motor coordination, written expression,
initiation and follow through, along with a feeling of self-satisfaction.

RIVER
WALK/ MALL WALK
Group Leader: Living Skills Staff
Description/
Therapeutic Value: A leisurely exercise group that occurs within
functional community settings, chosen based upon weather. The river
walk takes place in a serene, relaxing environment. Clients are
working on gait, community mobility, and cardiovascular endurance,
along with appropriate social interactions outside of the facility.
Frequency: 2-hours/week
SCHEDULING AND ACTIVITY GROUP
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist, Living Skills Staff
Description/Therapeutic Value: Each client is encouraged to assist in planning for the following week's appointment times and evening/weekend activities. Group and individual therapies are recommended per client, and several choices are available for the client to pick from so that a schedule may be complete. Focuses on leisure education.
Frequency: 1 hour/week
SOCIAL-COMMUNICATION GROUP
Group Leader: Speech Language Pathologists
Description/Therapeutic Value: Treatment activities address functions in such areas as neurofatigue, adynamia, disinhibition, attention/concentration, information processing, memory and executive functions as they relate to social communication skills. Individual Speech and Language goals are addressed within this group setting through the use of a step by step program for the retraining of social communication skills for people who have sustained a traumatic brain injury. Self assessment for the development of self awareness, combined with group feedback and use of compensatory strategies assist in the generalization of skills into a functional setting.
Frequency: 1 hour/week
TBI GROUP
Group Leader: Psychology, Several Team Therapists, Living Skills Staff
Description/Therapeutic Value: A group that emphasizes a holistic approach to foster adaptive psycho-social adjustment following brain injury in individuals and their significant others. The supportive group format allows structured opportunity for sharing of ideas, experiences, and strategies with gradated cognitive activities. Brain injury education is emphasized and includes learning about specific brain injury related problems, how to manage them, as well as providing a supportive environment where strategies can be practiced to diminish the effects of the problem. Relationships, self-appraisal, and self-confidence are highlighted as well. Cognitive psychological, and interpersonal components of favorable adjustments are developed through therapist led "community questions" and activities such as "Introduce Yourself".

TOWN HALL
MEETING
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist, Living Skills Staff
Description/
Therapeutic Value: This group provides a formal setting for gathering input from persons served. Such topics include review of weekend activities, discussing plans for the upcoming week/weekend, nominating a client of the month, clarifying community guidelines, gathering input about the Origami food menu, and acknowledging a co-clients success within therapy. Clients volunteer to lead each meeting, helping to develop self-esteem and social leadership skills.
Frequency: 1 hour/week
WOODWORKING
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist, Health & Safety Officer, Living Skills Staff
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Various woodworking projects are chosen and completed, based upon the client's interests and abilities (ie. coordination, safety awareness, attention span). Completion of wood projects helps to give clients a sense of pride, self worth, and accomplishment. Other skills addressed also include endurance, visual deficits, fine motor skills, coordination, and leisure education.

Care Program: This program allows families and loved ones to take
a “break” in their own care giving. Services can be
arranged based on family needs and Origami’s availability
of beds. Please contact the Rehabilitation Services Representative for further

Activity Program: At this level clients are able to choose which
activities they would like to participate in. If they would like
to participate in just one activity a day they may do so, or they
may choose to do more.
