Origami has
designed a unique system in which every group activity has proven
therapeutic value. Each activity group has written goals and objectives
developed by our treatment team. Groups may be lead by Origami support staff, therapists,
community members and/or Origami employees who are trained in specific
trades, for example carpentry.
ARTS AND CRAFTS GROUP
Group Leader: Art Therapist or Recreational Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Clients engage in art projects of their choice,
often theme or season related. Clients are responsible for research,
requesting needed materials, completion of the project, sometimes
taking a few weeks, and display of the project when completed. This
group addresses individual goals related to initiation and termination
of activity, self-expression, fine motor skills, sequencing, verbal
and written expression, following directions, and using creativity.

Group Leader: Art Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: An art therapist directed group, where clients
are encouraged to use unique art media to express themselves creatively
and beyond their normal realm of expression, so that they may learn
more about their own abilities.

Group Leader: Recreational Therapist or Direct Care Staff
Description/
Therapeutic Value: This recreational group incorporates several
social, physical and cognitive skills that are practiced in a functional
community setting.

COMMUNITY
LIVING SKILLS GROUP
Group Leader: Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant or Recreational Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Activities emphasize skills required for safe
and easy integration into the community. Activities include in-services
from various professions within the community, education on various
community resources, and other necessary activities.
Frequency: 1

CREATIVE
EXPRESSIONS GROUP
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Includes an introduction to literature and implements
various levels of reading and writing skills. This group activity
addresses literature appreciation, fine motor skills, conceptualization
of own ideas and thoughts, and encourages a trainee to explore ways
to become a happier individual. Works are shared and analyzed within
a comfortable supportive environment.
Frequency: 1-2

CREATIVE
MEMORIES
Group Leader: Art Therapist or Recreational Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Led by a community volunteer, clients are able
to utilize personal photographs of family, friends and special activities
to create personal memory books. Clients are able to choose from
a wide array of backgrounds, borders, and decorations for their
album pages to express their creativity and work towards reaching
their specific goals.
Frequency: 1

CULINARY
DELIGHTS
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Clients learn cooking skills and proper nutrition;
planning of meals, shopping, times; kitchen and food safety, money
management and budgeting; following directions/ sequence of recipe;
indicates level of independent living skills.
Frequency: 4 hours/

GAMES
GROUP
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: a therapeutic group activity that addresses specific
goals of each group member present, in a social setting. Example
“Speed” card game addresses visual and motor speed,
sequencing, fine motor coordination, and memory along with social
skills.
Frequency: 3-hours/week
GOAL
SETTING/ GOAL REVIEW
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist or Aide
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Beginning of week: Meeting between staff members
and clients to select goal(s) for the week. Staff members help to
select/guide appropriate goal choices. A poster that indicates each
individual’s goal for the week is created to serve as a reminder
and to encourage accountability. Midweek: Brief discussion/support/feedback
regarding goal progress and performance may be given during daily interactions. Problems are identified and strategies are refined.
End of Week: Follow-up. The group assists the client in determining
whether goals have been met. Support, encouragement, feedback, and
appraisal are offered.

NEWSLETTER
Group Leader: Art Therapist or Recreational Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: includes formulation of an Origami client created
newsletter that contains items created by clients that they would
like to share with others. Addresses goals related to creativity,
thought formulation, fine motor coordination, written expression,
initiation and follow through, along with a feeling of self-satisfaction.

TOWN HALL
MEETING
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: This group involves a review of trainee chosen issues and topics, problem solving, housekeeping assignments, and voting for "client of the month." Trainees volunteer to assist the internal care coordinator leading each meeting, helping to develop self-esteem
and social leadership skills.
Frequency: 1x

RIVER
WALK/ MALL WALK
Group Leader: Recreational Therapist
Description/
Therapeutic Value: A leisurely exercise group that occurs within
functional community settings, chosen based upon weather. The river
walk takes place in a serene, relaxing environment. Clients are
working on gait, community mobility, and cardiovascular endurance,
along with appropriate social interactions outside of the facility.
Frequency: 2-hours/week
WOODWORKING
Group Leader: Art Therapist, Recreational Therapist, or Health & Safety Officer
Description/
Therapeutic Value: Led by Origami’s Maintenance staff,
various wood working projects are chosen and completed, based upon
the client’s interests and abilities (i.e. coordination, safety
awareness, attention span). Completion of wood projects helps to
give clients a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Frequency: 2-hours/week

Care Program: This program allows families and loved ones to take
a “break” in their own care giving. Services can be
arranged based on family needs and Origami’s availability
of beds. Please contact the Rehabilitation Services Representative for further
details.

Activity Program: At this level clients are able to choose which
activities they would like to participate in. If they would like
to participate in just one activity a day they may do so, or they
may choose to do more.

ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION GROUP
Group Leader: Speech-Language Therapist
Description/ Therapeutic Value: Clients have the opportunity to offer suggestions/feedback in a group setting that will maximize his/her rehabilitation benefit. Clients learn assertive communication skills. Goals are individualized. An emphasis is placed on formulating ideas and following through on the suggestions that are given.
Frequency: up to 1 hour/week
COGNITIVE GROUP
Group Leader: Occupational Therapist or Recreational Therapist
Description/ Therapeutic Value: This group focuses on reinforcing treatment activities addressing areas covered by the “Hierarchy of Neuropsychological Functions” (i.e. Neurofatigue, Adynamia, Disinhibition, Attention, Concentration, Information Processing, Memory, and Executive functions) Goals are individualized, per client.
Frequency: up to 2-hours/week
GARDENING GROUP (SEASONAL)
Group Leader: Occupational Therapist or Recreational Therapist
Description/ Therapeutic Value: Includes landscaping, planting and maintenance of gardens, caring for and harvesting fruit from orchards and general beautification of the Origami grounds. Goals from all therapeutic disciplines are addressed, including: balance, fine motor coordination, visual-spatial perception, motor planning, range of motion, strengthening, pride, cause and effect, and social interactions. STRENGTH & CONDITIONING (Community Based)
Group Leader: Physical Therapist or Recreational Therapist
Description/ Therapeutic Value: an exercise group that occurs within a community setting. Results included: improved kinesthetics (body awareness); increased muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility; improved self-image; socialization; possible use of community resources to access transportation; time management (day schedule, workout time); leisure exploration and problem solving skills (setting up a specific workout routine).
Frequency: up to 6-8-hours/ week
HEALTHY LIFESTYLES GROUP
Group Leader: Physical Therapist or Recreational Therapist
Description/ Therapeutic Value: This group addresses fundamental principles related to wellness and lifetime fitness. Topics covered include: nutrition (food guide pyramid, calories, essential nutrients, meal planning, etc.), cardiovascular fitness, weight training, body composition, smoking cessation, stress management, and lifestyle-related illness (heart disease, stroke, adult onset diabetes, etc). With proper nutrition, education, our clients will be better equipped to make well-informed decisions regarding their lifestyle choices.
Frequency: up to 1 hour/week
TBI GROUP
Group Leader: Psychologist
Description/ Therapeutic Value: A group that emphasizes holistic approaches for education individuals with traumatic brain injury and their significant others. Cognitive, psychological, and interpersonal components are addressed through community questions and activities such as “Introduce Yourself”
Frequency: up to 2-hours/week
AQUATIC THERAPY
Group Leader: Physical Therapist or Recreational Therapist
Description: Therapeutic Value: exercise in a pool setting helps individuals practice gait and muscle mobility in a safe, balance supported environment. All clients work on flexibility, strengthening, and cardiovascular endurance while in the water. The hot tub helps to reduce muscular spasticity and increase flexibility.
Frequency: up to 4 hours/week
