What is Vocational Rehabilitation?
Vocational Rehabilitation is the process of providing support to an individual in obtaining goals for meaningful, productive activity at the highest possible level of independence. This support is provided through a comprehensive evaluation to determine pre-injury activities and goals, assessment of current abilities and interests, and assisting the individual to develop and implement a plan to achieve a realistic, long-term career goal.
Why is Vocational Rehabilitation provided?
Vocational Rehabilitation at Origami is provided as part of a holistic, comprehensive approach to rehabilitation following a brain injury. Clinical data and observations from other clinical disciplines are incorporated into treatment planning as learned skills and strategies are implemented in community settings.
Roles of the Vocational Rehabilitation Provider:

Assist injured persons in developing work readiness and the physical capacity necessary to work productively

Help the individual develop behaviors and skills required for future vocational tasks and job placement

Provide ongoing support to individuals and employers to ensure ongoing job success

Assist with job seeking skills which may include writing resumes and cover letters, job searching, and preparing for interviews

Provide education to employers, coworkers, and teachers about the effects of brain injury

Assist with the transition to school and educate the client on accommodations and strategies that would beneficial

Shadow the individual on the job to provide suggestions, identify adaptations and/or strategies on ways to improve work skills.

Complete ergonomic assessments

Identify and monitor the need to use additional resources for increased job support which could include the use of job coaches

Work with the individual to identify and resolve external factors that may be impacting work or school performance

Vocational Opportunities:
There are many levels of vocational intervention that use the individual's unique skills to reach individual goals. This allows for the most appropriate "vocational match." Services may include but are not limited to:
- Prevocational activities that can be completed within the Origami facility, and/or within the community when ready
- Job shadowing/career exploration
- Paid employment within a supported community or competitive setting (including pre-injury employment)
- Assistance with all types of schooling

Origami's partnership with Peckham, Inc.! Peckham is a nationally recognized community rehabilitation organization that provides a wide range of quality vocational cervices. The strong community employment network, including state of the art warehouse, manufacturing, and business service environments, offers highly customized vocational service options to meet each person's specific needs. Peckham provides Origami with an intense vocational evaluation program as needed, individualized "job tryouts," and several other vocational supports. This allows for unique work experiences, which better prepares the individual for meaningful, gainful employment. |
